Women in Ministry: An Annotated Bibliography & Further Reading

Since this series is setting off a firestorm through back channels (Stop flaming me! I can't keep up with the deletes!) and will probably continue to do so I am submitting my bibliography for perusal as a point of academic credibility and integrity. It will also allow people to review my sources for themselves. Yes, they are primary Evangelical. What did you expect? I was not horribly concerned with Liberal Theology since in most cases Liberal Theology is either not Christian in its presuppositions or is only marginally Christian as I outlined in my introduction.

The fact that this is stirring peoples ire before I even reach my conclusions in my synopsis tells me that this is much more inflammatory a topic than I once suspected. Frankly, I find the attacks rather startling in their fierceness especially from women. There are a lot of angry people in the world. Apparently, this is a highly active front in The War.

So go read for yourselves and draw your own conclusions. It is obvious from some of the "loquacious rhetoric" and "verbose terminologies" I recieved, that many of you already have made up your minds before I have even concluded with mine.

...and no, I am not pulling the posts down.

Bercot, David W.. A Dictionary of Early Christian Beliefs. 6. print. ed. Peabody, Mass.: Hendrickson, 2006. 693-694. Print. [A rather large and robust compendium of historical quotes starting with the Bible until the medieval church. A very thorough source. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen this density of quotes from early church fathers except in their own writings.] Book

Dusing, Michael L. "Chapter 16: The New Testament Church." Systematic Theology. Ed. Stanley M. Horton. Springfield: Logion Press, 2010. 553. Print. [A well-rounded and diversified anthology. Pentecostal, Charismatic and Evangelical perspective. Being an anthology it is not as thorough as other systematic theology books but it deals with diversity of subject] Anthology.

[Easy to read, elementary introduction to hermeneutics and interpretation that just happened to go into detail concerning 1 Corinthians 11 passage as noted] Book

Harkness, Georgia Elma. Women in Church and Society; A Historical and Theological Inquiry. Nashville: Abingdon Press, 1972. Print. [A very good book that was reasoned from a female point of view in a mostly biblical manner. Final polemic at the end of book for and against women in the ministry was extremely poorly reasoned though. It was done from modern theology, modern psychological reasoning and generalized assumptions that played on stereotypes. It was not biblically founded in the Bible.] Book.

Howe, E.M. "Women, Ordination of." Evangelical Dictionary of Theology. Grand Rapids: Baker Pub Group, 1990. 1180-1182. Print. [An amazingly thorough dictionary of theological terms spanning the entire spectrum of theological thought from modern day to antiquity. Predominately Reformed and evangelical in scope although it does address many non-Reformed topics including those of Catholicism leading me to believe it is unbiased] Encyclopedia of Theology.

Keener, Craig S.. The IVP Bible Background Commentary: New Testament. Downers Grove, Ill.: InterVarsity Press, 1993. 612-613. Print. [This initially appeared to be a good background commentary of the New Testament. It delved into lesser known aspects of the culture of the books of the New Testament to help reader have a more well-rounded view of the Scripture. Problem: When cross-referencing information from this book with known writings from antiquity (Josephus: Antiquities) I found what appeared to be discrepancies or incongruities. This for me this makes everything else in the book subject to scrutiny pending my own investigation.] Book: Expositional, Theological and Philological Commentary

Keener, Craig S. "Women In Ministry." Two Views On Women In Ministry. Ed. James R. Beck, Craig L. Blomberg. Grand Rapids: Zondervan, 2001. 25-73. Print. [A balanced anthology arguing for and against women in ministry. Discusses both the egalitarian (equal gender roles) and the complementarian (distinct gender roles). Both views appear to be Biblically based and abundantly quoted with scripture.] Anthology.

Kroeger, C.C & R.C.. "Women In The Church." Evangelical Dictionary of Theology. Grand Rapids: Baker Pub Group, 1990. 1183-1184. Print. MacHaffie, Barbara J.. Readings In Her Story: Women in Christian Tradition. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, 1992. Print. [Of all my sources, this was the most feminist in orientation. I tried to drift as closely as possible to the cultural mindset (which this book embodied) without actually taking up their position] Book

[Evangelical view of women in Christianity and surrounding culture of nascent Christianity and also had Church and cultural position down to the present. Had a slight feminist slant but not enough of one to deter me from using it as a resource] Book.
