The sinner and the seared conscience. The idea is similar to the condition where the skin on an area like your hand has been burnt and scarred so badly that the nerves in the area have been deadened. In the same way when man continues to sin in a certain area that area becomes desensitized to sin. To continue to violate your conscience is to continue to put your hand into the fire. Conscience does not make the law, but is a judge that convicts of guilt, passes sentence, in respect to moral obligations. Conscience, as a judge, smiles upon obedience, and frowns upon disobedience.
"Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared, who forbid marriage and require abstinence from foods that God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth. ~1 Timothy 4:1-3
Your nervous system serves a function as does your conscience. It is a warning system. If you continue to put your hand in fire eventually it will become so badly burned it will break the skin or damage the flesh. Once the surface is compromised infection will set in and possibly become gangrenous. At this point not only will your hand become compromised your life may actually be in jeopardy. All because you continued to deaden your senses to the corrupting or damaging influence. A seared conscience doesn't allow a person to feel guilt that is a warning that they are doing something wrong. It not just a conscience that is dulled it is a conscience that doesn't function. Something that is destroying them. So they do not stop and the sin continues to devastate their life. In some cases they no longer even realize they are sinning or doing something wrong. They keep doing wrong over and over. Eventually God gives them over to their sinfulness.
"And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient" ~Romans 1:28
"They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate." ~Titus 1:16
Unlike the (PDFA) Partner For A Drug-Free America commerical, I'm not going to ask if you have any questions. If you're dopey enough to pursue something that our Holy God tells you that you shouldn't and then not be repentant for it. Then no answer I can give other than "Jesus" is going to help you anyway.
Sin. Unsightly, unappetizing, tastes bad, smells bad (especially the more it burns you) and has little or no value nutritional or otherwise. It's just plain nasty.
